Learning from Videos 2 - Hrithik Roshan on Life, Philosophy and Happiness

It has been a while since I enjoyed an interview so much. Hrithik Roshan is an Indian Actor known for his work in films like Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Koi Mil Gaya and Guzaarish. I have always admired Hrithik's body of work. But this interview with the ever so impressive film critic, Anupama Chopra, made me admire Hrithik for who he was as a human being. A few highlights from this interview and my personal interpretation of it.. Watch it on the Film Companion You Tube Channel here.

  1.  You don't have to run after success, success will be a by product of your enthusiasm, passion and happiness for the work you love doing.
  2. A happy life is one which is beyond your own life - We are always so focused on ourselves. But when we go beyond, we give ourselves a chance to add value to other people's lives and that will be the legacy you leave behind.
  3. Fail for your passion - To make someone strong you have to throw them out, that is how they build strength, you've got to fall down to learn how to walk.
  4. Hrithik on his relationship with his father - Father's have to provide and give security. My father has been doing that and there is just no end to it. He was so concerned for me, that he kept making things tough for me. He wanted me to stand on my own feet. He wanted me to be successful on my own terms.
  5. Hrithik on Stardom - I had become a superstar and I did not feel it. One day, I was a nobody and the next I was being mobbed at a local Cinema. It seemed surreal. I needed to find a place within to deal with this situation
  6. On Connecting with a Character - I can't say the line if I don't know where the person is coming from. I need to understan the character on a deeper level. I need these roles to help me grow as a person.
  7. Keep letting go - Don't hold on to the past. There is too much burden. Push ahead. Rather try re creating your future and live that dream in the moment.
  8. Find your own Philosophy - So many philosophies in life you can adopt. One for each day. Try finding your own philosophy.
Finally as Hrithik says, always ask, 'What can I do to make this situation better?'
