Education and Gamification - 4 Lessons

Jesse Schell inspires me. Over the past few days, Jesse's various videos, blogposts and talks introduced me to the world of Gaming. Here are 4 ideas from Jesse Schell and the Gaming World on how to make Education Beautiful again.

Find out more about Jesse's work here - http://artofgamedesign.com/

1)         Bring Beauty into Education – He mentions by Mizuko Ito. In her book, she describes three ways students learn which is also the title of the book. They are, ‘Hanging Out, Messing Around and Geeking Out’. Jesse Schell then describes how all three aspects can be included in a learning environment. He mentions the example of YouMedia where students are given all the equipment they need to explore their interests. Then mentors guide them with the use of these instruments if they see a slight interest in a particular field for a student. Then the students go out and create their own content using the equipment.

2)         Bring Customization into Education –  He mentions the example of YouMedia in one of his talks. Here students are given all the equipment they need to explore their interests. Then mentors guide them with the use of these instruments if they see a slight interest in a particular field for a student. Then the students go out and create their own content using the equipment. He also mentions the example of another High School called Quest to Learn where all the learning takes place through student created games.

3)         Bring a culture of sharing into EducationJesse also describes an exercise he undertook at the Entertainment Technology Center he works at, where he brought a group of multi skilled participants together and told them to work together on a virtual project. A programmer, 3-D Modeler, Painter and sound designer will all be on the same team. The project cannot be done by only one person and needs all their support and input to make it successful.

4)         Bring reality into EducationJesse Schell provides a solution for the reality crisis by mentioning the example of Animation Center, where the world’s best animators teach students who are really passionate about animation. The teachers work in full time studios and a strict selection critieria is there where only the best animation students are selected for the program.
